Patch Testing
How to Perform a Patch Test at Home
Before applying any homemade dilution of essential oils to larger areas of skin, it’s important to check for sensitivity or allergic reactions. A patch test is a simple way to do this safely at home.
Step 1: Prepare Your Dilution
-
Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil (such as apricot kernel, jojoba, almond, or coconut oil).
-
A common starting ratio for a patch test is 1 drop of essential oil in 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of carrier oil.
Step 2: Choose a Test Area
-
Use a small, discreet area of skin, such as the inside of your forearm or behind your ear.
-
Make sure the skin is clean and free from other products.
Step 3: Apply the Oil
-
Dab a small amount of your diluted mixture onto the test area.
-
Cover it with a plaster or bandage if you like, to prevent it from rubbing off.
Step 4: Wait and Observe
-
Leave the test area undisturbed for 24 hours.
-
Check for signs of redness, itching, burning, or rash.
-
If irritation occurs, wash the area with mild soap and water immediately and do not use the oil blend.
Step 5: Assess Results
-
If no reaction occurs after 24 hours, the blend is likely safe for your skin.
-
Even if the test is clear, always use essential oils sparingly and discontinue use if irritation develops later.
Important Notes
-
Never apply undiluted essential oils directly to skin for patch testing.
-
Avoid testing on broken, irritated, or sensitive skin.
